Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s arch-conservative Brothers of Italy party won the most votes in the European parliamentary election over the weekend, boosting her standing both domestically and internationally. With nearly all ballots counted, the Brothers of Italy secured 28.8% of the vote, more than quadrupling its share from the 2019 EU election and surpassing the 26% it achieved in the 2022 national ballot.
“I am proud that Italy will present itself to the G7 and to Europe with the strongest government. This is unprecedented and brings both satisfaction and great responsibility,” Meloni stated early Monday.
The opposition center-left Democratic Party came in second with 24% of the vote, while the 5-Star Movement finished third with 9.9%—its poorest showing since its inception in 2009.The EU ballot revealed that Meloni’s ruling coalition, which includes parties from the center-right to the far right, saw its support rise to over 47%, up from just under 43% in 2022.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Italy later this week, days after being sworn in for a third term. Modi will join global leaders at the G7 summit in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13-15, attending on June 14.Italy and India elevated their bilateral relations to a “strategic partnership” during Italian PM Giorgia Meloni’s visit to New Delhi in March 2023.
