A meeting of the steering committee for the single Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for the Mezzogiorno was held at Palazzo Chigi today, attended by the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni.
President Meloni called the steering committee meeting following the decision to keep the portfolio regarding southern Italy at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and in order to systematise all actions undertaken by the Government to revitalise the Mezzogiorno, starting with the single SEZ. The latter provides a real strategic framework for reforms and investments aimed at fostering development in Italy’s southern regions.
During the steering committee meeting, President Meloni provided the Ministers, Presidents of Italy’s southern Regions and representatives of ANCI [National Association of Italian Municipalities] and UPI [Union of Italian Provinces] with an initial overview of the results achieved by this initiative, which the Government strongly advocated for in order to strengthen the South’s productive fabric. The single SEZ provides for two very significant instruments: a simplified ‘single authorisation’ system and a tax credit for investments.
The figures show the effectiveness: since 1 January 2024, when the single SEZ was established, 415 ‘single authorisations’ have been issued, regarding investments worth approximately EUR 2.4 billion, exceeding in just 11 months the total investments of the eight previous SEZs (EUR 1.9 billion), as well as creating an estimated 8,000 jobs. With the single SEZ, the average time needed for authorisations to be issued has been reduced to approximately 30 days.
The tax credit has proven equally successful, granting a total amount of EUR 2.5 billion and ensuring 100% of the credit requested.
