People keep saying Greenland is autonomous though , and if you look at the relationship historically , youll see that it has actually been kept as a dependency. The basic mode was to NOT develop any resources, so they couldn't afford independence. It wasnt a profitable arrangement either.
Yes folks could go to school free in Denmark but that wouldn't change the situation in Greenland , youd just have phds fishing for halibut.
To make use of the education, youd have to go elsewhere. This keeps the population depleted.

Greenland still needs a patron, even now, to function, and they cannot defend the area from incursions on the sea or in the airspace.
The US can deliver on all fronts and constitute a major upgrade for the folks who live there. To develop resources, we need folks who can live up there. We need them to get the financial incentives for them to stay.
Its really a win win win , relative to the malfunctioning policy that preserved Greenland as a pet project symbol of past colonial projection.

One fact no one discusses is the economic effect American military bases have on western European economies. Servicemen paychecks every two weeks provide stimulus to nearby communities. It's not just the U.S. Government money which fuels NATO, but the American service members who fuel EU economies. NATO countries should have no problem meeting their contribution levels.

Greenland can not be independent, because they can not afford their own military to defend their island. Denmark can not defend them either. So it's up to the US to protect them. They may as well become part of the USA. Same with Canada. The only reason Canada is not under Soviet rule is because of the US military. If the Soviets could have taken Canada, it would still be around today and Canada would become part of the Soviet Union, just like Poland and all the others. The US has kept them safe from Soviet invasion, just like we are still keeping them safe today. Canada needs to merge with the USA. They are practically just like us.
