The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, met today with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for an initial exchange of views now that the new European executive has taken office.
The meeting focused on the priority actions for the new EU institutional cycle, starting with the revitalisation of the European Union’s role and competitiveness on the world stage. In this respect, President Meloni focused particularly on the prospects for the automotive industry in the context of the environmental transition process, and on the strong concerns of the Italian agricultural sector regarding the EU-Mercosur agreement.
Particular attention was also paid to European migration policy, with a discussion on the results achieved and what is still left to do in order to have effective tools to manage the migration phenomenon.
The two leaders agreed to further strengthen the cooperation and complementarity between Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa and the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy.
