Following today’s Council of Ministers session, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, chaired a meeting to assess developments in the situation in Syria, its initial implications and the related measures to be taken.
The meeting was attended by Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto, Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano, who is delegated authority for security services, and the heads of the intelligence services.
With fighting still ongoing in certain regions in Syria, the meeting reiterated the absolute priority of safeguarding civilians and the need to ensure a peaceful and inclusive transition. There was a particular focus on the safety of Italian citizens and the protection of Christians and of all minorities.
As other European partners have done, the Government decided during the meeting to suspend the processing of asylum applications from Syria. The Government also decided to maintain a diplomatic presence in Damascus and extends deep gratitude to all the staff at the Italian diplomatic mission.
The Government will continue to carefully follow developments, in close contact with the main regional, European and G7 partners.
