President Meloni’s video message to 2025 Farmindustria General Assembly

Good morning everyone, and thanks to President Cattani and Managing Director Giorgetti for the invitation. I’m sorry I couldn’t be at the Conciliazione Auditorium in person for Farmindustria’s General Assembly, but I nevertheless wanted to send you my greetings and my contribution to your working sessions.

This was important to me, as the pharmaceutical industry is an example of Made in Italy excellence and a strategic sector for our economy. The figures tell us so. Italy boasts a leading position in Europe thanks to its very dynamic and well-rooted productive and industrial fabric made up of large companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, which generated over EUR 56 billion in production and achieved 54 billion in exports in 2024.

The pharmaceutical industry is key to ensuring safe, effective and innovative treatments for all citizens. The value of this sector goes beyond economic figures, directly impacting people’s lives; thanks to research and innovation, it enables treatment pathways to continuously advance, reshaping the future of medicine time and time again. Today, treatment innovations enable us to treat diseases that until a few years ago had fatal consequences, such as cancer, rare diseases, chronic conditions and neurodegenerative disorders. This is why, in a nation like ours, second only to Japan in the world for longevity, it is a priority to invest in life sciences, technological development and scientific research. Italy already plays a leading role in clinical research, but I am convinced we have the tools, skills and human capital to achieve new milestones and fully harness the potential deriving from the development of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies too.

It is also, and above all, for this reason that we are determined to carry on with our work regarding reforms, simplification, a reduction in regulatory procedures, access to medicines, and enhancement of the research and development investments we have launched over these years, which is already delivering results. We of course intend to pursue this commitment together with you and all those who drive such a crucial sector for Italy every day, making it the example of excellence it is: men and women in the worlds of science, clinical research and academia, healthcare professionals, pharmacists, chemists, biologists and technicians.

    

We will continue to be by your side, because supporting the pharmaceutical industry means something very simple: it means investing in the future, in healthcare, in quality jobs and in Italy and Europe’s ability to drive innovation.
