Italy’s Giorgia Meloni boards ‘Amerigo Vespucci’ ship on her visit to Saudi Arabia |Jeddah

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, on Saturday (January 25) arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as part of a three-day visit to Persian Gulf countries.
On her arrival, Meloni was welcomed by Saudi authorities, including the Deputy Governor of Makkah Region, Prince Saud Bin Mishaal Bin Abdulaziz.
Later, the prime minister headed to the Islamic port to meet the crew of the Italian training ship ‘Amerigo Vespucci,’ which was in Jeddah as the 33rd stop on its world tour.
The vessel “is an extraordinary ambassador of Italy,” Meloni said on board during her meeting with the crew, whom she praised for their achievements.
Arriving at the port, Meloni answered some questions from Italian journalists, including on the case of the Libyan war crimes suspect, Osama Almasri Njeem.
Almasri was detained in Italy on January 19 under an International Criminal Court arrest warrant, but was unexpectedly released and repatriated due to his social dangerousness.
“Almasri was released by order of the Court of Appeal in Rome, not by order of the government,” Meloni said, adding that she will ask the ICC for explanations on the timing of the arrest warrant.
Meloni also talked about Monte Paschi (MPS)’s bid for Mediobanca, defining it “a market transaction” and saying MPS is “now a perfectly reorganised bank” after several years of crisis.
Meloni’s trip will continue with a bilateral meeting with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, and on Monday (January 27) she will travel to Bahrain.
