Naples Nativity Scene 2024

Via San Gregorio Armeno, known as “Christmas Alley,” is a part of Neapolitan Christmas heritage. For over five centuries, this narrow cobblestone street has been home to the artisans who specialize in creating Presepi, the elaborate nativity scenes that are integral to Italian Christmas traditions. We have seen these all over Italy. In these historic botteghe (workshops), craftsmen continue their tradition of creating nativity scenes.

Of course, the centerpiece of each is the holy family, the baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Many portray the scene set in 17/18th century times, indicative of the time when this tradition started.

Many other professions are included, like butcher shops complete with tiny hanging prosciutto, bakers working with miniature loaves, women carrying water jugs, and children playing in the streets. Each figurine is meticulously hand-painted, with careful attention paid to facial expressions, clothing details, and the weathered textures of the surrounding buildings.

Local businesses often have Presepi that reflect their business. For example, a formaggeria might have a cheese maker next to the inn.

Today, Via San Gregorio Armeno remains a living museum where visitors can witness this centuries-old craft being practiced just as it has been since the 1500s. We enjoyed our visit.
