President Meloni meets with the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Magnus Brunner

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, received the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Magnus Brunner, at Palazzo Chigi today, as part of his first visit to Italy.

The meeting focused on the European Commission’s forthcoming migration policy initiatives, starting with the strengthening of partnerships with migrants’ countries of origin and of transit and implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, including the possibility to bring forward the new ‘safe country of origin’ concept. President Meloni also reiterated her support for a new and more effective European regulatory framework regarding returns, in view of the Commission’s imminent presentation of a specific legislative proposal.

Lastly, particular attention was paid to innovative solutions regarding migration and, first and foremost, implementation of the Italy-Albania Protocol, in relation to which it was agreed to keep maintaining close operational contact between Commission services and Italian authorities.
