Summit on peace and security for Ukraine in Paris

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, attended today’s Summit on peace and security for Ukraine in Paris.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reiterate the commitment of European and Western partners to a just and lasting peace, which requires ongoing support for Ukraine as well as solid and credible security guarantees. President Meloni reaffirmed that security guarantees must be grounded in the Euro-Atlantic context, also based on a model that can partly reflect the provisions of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. President Macron expressed interest in a possible technical analysis of this proposal, which President Meloni welcomed.

During the meeting, the leaders also discussed the importance of effective implementation and monitoring of a ceasefire, in relation to which a possible United Nations role is emerging, in line with the Italian Government’s position. President Meloni also stated that it is now important to be able to extend the partial ceasefire to civil infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, with the goal of reaching a complete ceasefire.

Reaffirming that there are no plans for Italy to participate in a possible military force on the ground, President Meloni stressed the importance of continuing to work with the United States to bring an end to the conflict and achieve a peace that ensures Ukraine’s sovereignty and security, expressing her hope that a US delegation would be involved in the next coordination meeting.
