”I believe in empty spaces, they’re the most wonderful thing.”
– Anselm Kiefer, “Anselm Kiefer:’Art is difficult, it’s not entertainment'” by Alex Needham, The Guardian. 08 Dec 2011.

At a moment of isolation, space becomes something quite intimate. It becomes something we notice again, something that we ironically were never without. However, through isolation, our understanding of space is put to the test, whether it is our perception of distance within space between individuals, or the weight of physical barriers from inside to outside, our sense of space has been heightened. As our virtual space impedes further upon our physical space, we are presented with the unique opportunity to further document this transition of space. As we are confronting firsthand, a disruption of one’s space at any scale can cause anxiousness, confusion, and harm. On the other hand, through the right lens of internal and external perception this understanding of space can be taken as an opportunity to slow things down, bring about patience, and re-develop notions of delayed gratification. EMPTY SPACES becomes a platform for our contributors from across the country to document that transition of space, to capture the thing that was invisible for far too long.
